Nationally, approximately 5 million low-income adults aged 60+ rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). On average, households with elderly individuals receive $125 per month to help put food on the table.
Currently, only two out of five of seniors eligible for SNAP are enrolled in the program. Some seniors may not know about SNAP or how to enroll, or they may think that the application process is too difficult. It is important that outreach to underserved populations continues, and that barriers to applying for help are addressed.
In this Connections Webinar, we discussed NCOA’s Center for Benefits Access, the work of the Chicago Food Depository, and provided an update on hunger policy and advocacy amidst the pandemic. The conversation was followed by a Q&A session with the guest speakers.
